Monday started another exciting work week. The routine that I had become so accustomed to felt like it was pulling me slowly and methodically toward retirement, even though I was barely in my mid-twenties. Every day I was able to save one more penny toward the happy days that I would eventually have, sometime in the distant future. During the work day, my eyes always flitted to the spot on the wall and back to my screen every time someone walked by.

After the fourth and fifth time that Zach asked me to go to the beer festival with him I reluctantly caved.  He was incessant about it because he wasn’t sure how to handle the Sarah situation. He had been texting her and trying to talking to her, but he feared that there was another guy that she was talking with. There were pictures online that gave him this suspicion, but other than that it was just “a feeling”, he would say. I liked beer, anyways, and I didn’t have any other plans that weekend.

The next morning brought about a similar ritual, except around ten when Michael Varner, an advisor from downstairs, came to my office.

“Hey, Peter, you busy?” He poked his head into the door frame of my office. He probably could have seen for himself that I was working pretty hard at pretending to be busy.

Among The Thorns (Ch. 1, Sec. 1)

As promised, this is the the first section of the first chapter of the novel I have been working on. So without further ado:

I rolled over and turned off the alarm that had been fussing at me for ten minutes. I spun and sat on the edge of my bed rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. The floor stared back at me, taunting me to move forward. I looked up at the emptiness of the room in front of me. Finally, “Here we go,” was all I could muster before I lurched up to my feet and stumbled into the bathroom.
